Fish Oil And The Immune System

Autoimmune diseases occur when there is a problem in the immune system which causes the body to attack and destroy healthy tissue within the body itself. Somehow the messages within the body become distorted and cause this self destruction. When the system works optimally, all is well and the body functions as it should.

When things work as intended the body's white blood cells guard against harmful attacks by dangerous matter (antigens). Those matters could be bacteria, viruses, cancer cells, or blood from another source, any number of things. This is how the body works properly and begins to develop antibodies that will attack and kill the harmful invasive substances. This is all the amazing ways our bodies aid in keeping us healthy.

Now, when an autoimmune disorder enters the picture the immune system is unable to identify whether matter is healthy tissue or antigens. What happens then is an immune response which begins destroying normal body tissue. In other words, a harmful allergic reaction occurs and the destruction begins. All of this causes various degrees of inflammation.

Researchers, in various studies, discovered that Eskimos in Greenland have very low occurrences of the various autoimmune diseases. Oddly, these people ingest huge amounts of fish oil in their regular diets. Many believe that fish oil or fish oil supplements fight against autoimmune problems. Therefore, it is understandable that the Eskimos would have very low numbers of arthritis, psoriasis, asthma, and high blood pressure, problems just to name a few. All of these diseases are caused by the onset of autoimmune system problems,

Current scientific belief is that by adding omega-3 fatty acids to the diet will cause decreases in autoimmune diseases among the general population. This in turn has given researchers and physicians hope that by adding fish and/or fish oil supplements to the daily diets of patients with autoimmune problems might help decrease the incidence of autoimmune disease, decrease the need for prescribing drugs that often have debilitating side effects, not to mention are expensive and require the strict oversight by a physician because of the many side effects of those medications.

There may even be a genetic link that could cause autoimmune diseases which could make it more likely a person would be suitable to them.

Since ingesting fish and/or fish oil supplements fights inflammation, it would seem that adding these supplements to your diet could have a very positive effect on the body; especially if you are suffering from one of the autoimmune disorders.

Always check with your primary health care provider before adding any supplement to your diet.

Exercise and Fitness Myths

Fat turning into muscle and vice versa

This is one of the most common fitness myths I have heard, when I was first starting out, the most common piece of advice I received was, eat junk food to increase the amount of fat I had, then start lifting weights and turn that fat into muscle. The other thing people would say was if you stopped lifting weights that muscle would turn into fat.

Fat and Muscle are two different types of tissue, one cannot transform into the other, muscle can grow or shrink, and the same with the amount of fat tissue you have.

Spot Training

This is the one about trying to lose fat from a specific area of your body, by exercising that specific body part.

For example, somebody trying to lose belly fat by doing lots of sit ups or ab crunches, unfortunately it doesn't work like that, you can't pick and choose an area of your body to lose fat, that is decided by our genetics.

If somebody wanted to lose fat from their belly the best way to do this is to lower their overall body fat percentage, by exercise and good eating habits.

If you can't work out long enough you may as well not bother

Some people have the idea that they need to exercise 5 times a week for at least an hour to get any results, and if they can't commit that much time, they might as well not bother.

This is not the case, you can have a very productive workout in less than 30 minutes, a little exercise is better than none at all, just going for a short walk is beneficial.

Six Pack Myth

Some think the best way to get a six pack is to do loads of sit-ups and ab crunches, this will strengthen and tone your abdominals, but if you have a few layers of fat on your stomach, your abs will be hidden.

Doing something that burns more calories, like jogging or even walking would be a better first step in getting that six pack.

"I don't want to lift weights because I don't want to get to big"

One of my favourite fitness myths, I hear this a lot, sometimes I advise people who want to lose fat to do some weight training, because if they build up some extra muscle it will help them burn off fat and calories. Sometimes they reply with, "I don't want to do weight training because I will get too big".

What they don't understand is that it's not easy to put on large amounts of muscle, it's not in everybody's genetic makeup to look like a bodybuilder.

DIABETES SYMPTOMS

Diabetes is a disease that develops when the body is unable to produce or respond to insulin hormone in normal way. Diabetes is caused when pancreas doesn’t secrete enough insulin or any malfunction in pancreatic secretion. The pancreas produces insulin which located just behind the stomach. The body cannot regulate the glucose level in blood. Our body should maintain glucose level within the range which is maintained with the help of insulin and glucagon. The main function of glucagon is making liver to release glucose to blood. Glucose in blood gives energy to do our work in day to day life.

Type 1 diabetes is either juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes. The beta cells of the pancreas no longer make insulin because the body’s immune system has attacked and destroyed them. The cells in the pancreas affect insulin secretion and causing lack of insulin. Type 1 diabetes patients are to inject insulin to sustain life. It is recognized in childhood or young age.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which cells fail to use insulin properly. The insulin available may be abnormal or insufficient. About 90% of diabetes patients have type2 diabetic. It is usually recognized at the age of 40 and above. It is treated with control in diet, enough exercise, weight loss or oral medications.
If an individual has any type of diabetes, their blood has too much sugar.

Gestational diabetes is increase in blood sugar level during pregnancy. The hormones that secrete during pregnancy block insulin to do its job. So glucose level of blood will increase at that time. But it is not a life threatening disease for them. After delivery the blood sugar level will come within the range.

Diabetes is identified by increased hunger, increased thirst, and frequent urination, feeling tired, fatigue, blurred vision and sudden weight loss. If the above things are noted he or she should go immediately for doctor’s attention.

The cause of diabetes is mainly because of lack of physical activity, obesity, stress, eating food rich in fat and sugar.Blood sugar level should within the range 70 mg/dl -110 mg/dl at fasting. If blood sugar level goes below 70 mg/dl, that condition is said as hypoglycemia and it exceeds 110 mg/dl, that condition is said as hyperglycemia.

Diabetic patients should be very careful in eating food. They should avoid some tasty foods, take some food in less quantity and take some healthy foods. Food control is the main thing to keep diabetes in control.
